Hawn had sent him Markham's letter of recommendation, set up a luncheon but he never showed; asks if he received his poem "Lilith"; wants Hyatt's address; just finished another dramatic poem called "Rosamund" and will send him a copy when he published it.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
